   CAKMA and Mike Miles MuayThai present their first international fight event of 2010 on Friday, January 29th, 2010 at the Silver Dollar Casino in Calgary. The Main Event features Sandra Bastian making her professional debut in Calgary, up against Italy’s Annalisa Bucci. Also fighting against an Italian athlete is Misty Sutherland

   The card also features up and coming stars Peter Arbeau and Hakeem Dawodu competing against American athletes. The undercard also features Allison Kavanagh.

   WMC H2H Detonation in Calgary a Massive Success!!

   January 29th, 2010 – Calgary (CAN)

   Sanctioned by CMTC-A

   CMTC-A and Mike Miles MuayThai promoted their first international fight event of the year under the umbrella of the WMC. Taking place at the Silver Dollar Casino, the event was a complete sell out. Topping it off, the bouts were some of the most exciting seen in Calgary in the last while.

   

   Womens Professional Superlightweight

   WIN Sandra Bastian
   Split Decision

   Sandra Bastian’s professional debut in Calgary included this very well matched opponent, Annalisa Bucci from Italy (a world MuayThai Champion). Bastian, who also participated at this year’s IFMA World Championships  in Bangkok, had to work very hard for the win from the opening bell to the end of the bout. To her credit, Bucci showed great composure and good skills with her legs on the outside and in the clinch. Bastian started turning the tide in the mid to late rounds with some good kicks and punches to the head and body. Though Bastian won this bout, it was very, very close and a really good fight. There is talk of a rematch possibly in Italy. To here credit, Annalisa Bucci was to win the trophy for Willie Williams Best Visiting Fighter of the event.

   In the first round Rossi, started off quite slow and tried hitting Miles. The Canadian was extremely calm and composed and avoided the majority of strikes while countering with some very good body kicks and low kicks. This served to frustrate Rossi who threw some heavy kicks that Miles picked off and grabbed while kicking out the supporting leg of his opponent. In the clinch, Miles proved slippery and put the Italian to the canvas several times. By the end of the first round Rossi’s legs were bruised. In the second round, Rossi picked up the intensity and he started out very aggressively. Miles still managed to move and avoid the shots while countering effectively. Miles caught a kick of the Italians and kicked the leg out and while Rossi was still falling Miles followed with another body kick. This connected and was the blow that saw Rossi in pain and unable to continue. Having returned from several months in Thailand (and using a great deal of new tricks in the bout that he learned) Miles was to say, “When I fought Mungkornphet (in Thailand), I learned you hit the guy as many times as you can while he is going down. It was a hard lesson but I applied it here.” Rossi, an Italian Champion, just could not deal with the sharper Canadian. Miles wa sto win the bout by second round TKO.

   From the opening bell, Sutherland just looked too strong in this bout. Dussin fought very hard and showed great composure (when she got hit) but she just did not possess the raw power of the Canadian. Sutherland’s kicks and body shots kept scoring and these proved to be the blows required to stop her Italian opponent in the 2nd round. “This was Misty’s first bout back after winning the Silver Medal in Bangkok at the IFMA World Championships. She still made some mistakes that we must work on correcting”, said Coach Mike Miles. Misty now prepares for the World Combat Games in Beijing.

   Unanimous Decision

   One of the most ‘entertaining’ matches of the evening. As the bout opened Arbeau took a kick to the groin and needed time to recover. As the bout continued, Downing danced all over the ring to confuse Arbeau. A variety of judo leg sweeps, wrestling throws (including a double leg take down and low sweeps on the ground), and even unintentional head butts were used on Arbeau. Downing was to grab and continually sweep Arbeau to the canvas and in the process was to have a point finally deducted in the 3rd round. Then two athletes were throwing each other to the canvas and as one would fall he would throw the other. By the 3rd round Arbeau had settled into the fight and was catching Downing with some very heavy kicks to the body and elbows in the clinch. Still Arbeau was to take an illegal low blow and this angered him. He ran at Downing jumping to throw a technique and Downing was to duck while the Canadian sailed over him. Everyone was astounded including Arbeau! Downing continued through to the opposite side of the ring purposely showing he was unscathed and the Canadian did not hit him. In the final two rounds Downing was tiring, but he was never out of the fight. Arbeau just started catching his foe with more and more heavy body kicks. Arbeau was to win the bout by unanimous decision. Downing is quite the showman, and he works the audience into a frenzy.

   

   Mens Welterweight

   Anthony Laviola
   (Toronto CAN :: Bellissimo)

   WIN Anthony Laviola
   Unanimous Decision

   This was somewhat of a defensive fighter clinic by Laviola to Calgarian Markle. Hometown athlete, Markle just could not pull the trigger in this fight. Laviola seemed to always be one step ahead of Markle in the bout. Laviola would either be first in the exchanges or make Markle miss and then counter with nice teeps and punches. The winner by unanimous decision was Laviola. Watch out for Laviola as he continues to make a name for himself having handily defeated athletes like Harold Lindor from Toronto and Chris McMillan from Calgary.

   Mens Welterweight

   Hakeem Dawodu

   Russell Benes

   WIN Hakeem Dawodu
   Unanimous Decision

   There was great MuayThai action from these two athletes over the course of 5 rounds. Benes would move and dance, throwing techniques while Dawodu showed the calm and composure he learned while fighting in Bangkok at the end of 2009. Benes had a problem dealing with the speed of Dawodu. The Calgarian Dawodu, did hurt the American during the 3rd (low kicks), 4th (head punches) and 5th rounds (low kicks) but never capitalized. Dawodu needs to develop more of a killer instinct to finish his opponent when the opportunity arises. Benes delivered some excellent technique while Dawodu responded in kind. Dawodu was to take a unanimous decision in this very good fight.

   Mens Welterweight

   Split Decision

   These two athletes have fought before, so this bout made the second encounter. In this bout, the shorter Arkossy spent most of this fight backpedalling punching with Pops pressing forward. Arkossy threw very sparingly and did connect with some good shots, but Pops was to press and fire more leather. Pops was to win this bout making a rubber match between the two a must in the future.

   Mens Cruiserweight

   3rd Round TKO

   These two relatively newcomers to the ring provided a good opening bout to get the audience going. Gossen was to take this fight handily in the first two rounds pressing and landing some good punches and kicks. In the third, Brister went to the clinch and pressed forward. A big clinch towards the end of the round was to bloody Gossen’s face who could not continue. Brister was to win the bout by 3rd round TKO.

   The WMC would like to congratulate the CMTC-A and Mike Miles for their great ongoing efforts in the promotion and development of muaythai.
